Meditation in the Morning
By Barbara Shuman
I joined over 200 delegates at the Meditation Schacharit service this morning (one of 4 options). It was a vivid reminder of the wide range of worship possibilites in our movement. Last night's maariv service was joyous, loud, jazzy and hot. This morning was also joyful, but in a quiet, contemplative and cool way. We were guided to follow our breath , a constant reminder of the Divine ruach that God breathes into us in every moment.
This time the prayers, instead of being projected onto large screens, were written on our hearts and we were reminded to seek God within ourselves and within each other. I had the honor of carrying the Torah through the congregation and was overwhelmed as the attention of all was focussed on the scroll. Many ran to reach out and touch the Torah and I felt in some small way like a spirtual messenger. I guess each of us has the potential to bring godliness into the midst of our congregations, to carry our Torah and teach by example. Waht a wonderful beginning to another great day at the Biennial!
