The Torah In Haiku: Toldot

Rivkah and Ya’kov

Of family dysfunction
Our founders? Human.

The commentators say Rebeccah had to make sure Jacob got Isaac’s blessing, because of what G-d told her when she was pregnant and the twins were fighting in her womb.

Genesis 25:23
“And G-d said to her: Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be separated from your bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.”

This is not the first time the actions of our patriarchs and matriarchs seem more a cautionary tale than behavior we should emulate. But they accomplish great things despite their human frailties. So there’s hope for us, too.
