I’m On My Way to Israel

In just a few hours, I will be leaving for Israel.

As rockets continue to fall on Southern Israel, and as Hamas is targeting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, I believe it is critical that, on behalf of our entire Movement, I demonstrate our solidarity with, and commitment to, the people of Israel. I realize, of course, that Thanksgiving week is a time of travel and family gatherings for those in the United States. But, as the rockets continue to fall, I know that this week will not be “as usual” for many of us.

This evening, I will be traveling to Israel with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and expect to meet with senior governmental, political, and military leaders while we’re there. Equally important, I will be spending time with the students on our NFTY-EIE High School in Israel program and hope to visit with participants from Netzer Year, Tikkun Olam, students at HUC-JIR in Jerusalem, and the congregations of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism. In this time of uncertainty and concern, I want to be sure that Reform Jews living in Israel know that their Movement is here to offer them support in any way possible.

You can lend this support from home, as well, wherever your home may be. You can educate yourself about Operation Pillar of Defense and encourage others to do the same, by watching and reading the news and by using our helpful FAQ. You can stand with Israel by donating to Jewish Federations of North America’s Israel Terror Relief Fund, which will aid organizations that are delivering immediate services and assistance on the ground to those affected throughout the south of Israel. And as both Thanksgiving and Shabbat approach, you can keep Israel in your thoughts, your prayers, and your heart by incorporating any of these blessings, prayers, and poems into your worship, whether congregational, familial, or individual.

And finally, you can join me for a conference call on Monday, November 26th at 3:00pm EST. Having just returned from Jerusalem, this will serve as an opportunity to report on my trip and to answer your questions. Call-in information is as follows:

Monday, November 26, 2012, 3:00 PM, ET
To join via computer: Register
To dial in via phone: +1 (626) 544-0059 | Access Code: 330-579-532

This week of Thanksgiving, let us enjoy our family and friends, and let us pray for peace in the Holy Land.

May you travel safely, and have a successful visit. I fervently hope that you find a true cease-fire when you arrive.
