WUPJ Statement on the Arrest of Six Suspects in Connection with Murder of Palestinian Teen

The following statement comes from leaders of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, in response to news of the arrest of six individuals in conjunction with the murder of a Palestinian teenager:

Six suspects, members of a Jewish extremist cell according to the Shin Bet security agency, were arrested Sunday in connection with the horrific murder of 16-year-old Mohammed Abu Khdeir. His burned body was found in the Jerusalem forest on Wednesday morning. The World Union for Progressive Judaism joins the Israeli government and all people of conscience the world over in condemning this ghastly act.

Now, as is the case with any democracy, Israel has the opportunity to prove that justice is blind and that extremism and vigilantism has no place in an enlightened society.

While we counsel restraint during these particularly emotional times, the tragic death of Mohammed Abu Khdeir must be prosecuted swiftly.

If a trial finds that Jews are indeed guilty of this unconscionable killing, our condemnation is redoubled. The idea that Jews could do such an act fills us with shame and horror. It is not enough for the entire House of Israel to dissociate itself from the dreadful act; we must also ensure that crimes like this are never repeated.

And we pray, that the events of the recent past lead us to a reinvigorated search for peace.

לא ישא גוי אל גוי חרב ולא ילמדו עוד מלחמה
Nation shall not lift sword against nation, Nor ever shall they train for war. (Isaiah, 2:4)
