Support the URJ on #GivingTuesday

Thanksgiving used to be a day unto itself; now we have a whole Thanksgiving season! Americans’ shopping habits brought us catchily-named, add-on “holidays” like Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. In the last couple of years, we’ve thankfully (no pun intended) added a new day to the mix: #GivingTuesday. On this special day, we put aside commercialism and raise up the Jewish value of tzedakah (charity) as a community.

As you plan your giving, I hope this year you will consider supporting the Reform Movement. As the URJ launches our 2020 Vision, we reach out to all Reform Jews and ask for their support – your support. We have congregations to strengthen, tikkun olam (repair of the world) to perform, doors to open, and seekers to inspire. We have accomplished so much already, and 2015 represents a step forward in growth, evolution and modernity.

The Reform Movement has a proud history of collective social impact. Jewish scriptures teach us, “Tzedakah is equal to all the other commandments combined” [Talmud, Bava Batra 9b]. We know that the impact of 1.5 million Reform Jews working together is far greater than the impact any of us could have individually. How fitting, then, that we band together on this day of global giving and strengthen our Reform Movement.

On #GivingTuesday, get involved:

  • Discuss the importance of giving and tzedakah at your Thanksgiving gathering.
  • Support the URJ. Visit
  • Share our #GivingTuesday posts on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Take your own #unselfie a to tell the world why you support the URJ. Use our downloadable sign or create your own.
  • Share your image on social media using the hashtag #GivingTuesday. Don’t forget to tag the URJ so others can find us!

The festive meal and colorful parade may delight us, but the essence of Thanksgiving is to show gratitude. This year, let us appreciate not only the gifts we have, but also the gifts we can give to help repair our broken world. On #GivingTuesday, please give generously, and then help us spread the word by inviting your friends and family to support a strong Reform Jewish future, too.
