Teen Joins Fellow Jews in Marking Judaism’s Holy Days
on September 26, 2011
As far as Emma Nathanson knows, she’s the only Jewish student among about 725 at General McLane High School in Erie County. Even in a small Jewish community like hers, preparations have begun for the High Holy Days.
Writing Camp Jobs on a Resume
on September 8, 2011
Anyone who includes a camp job on a resume begins a fight. Thanks, in part, to movies like Meatballs, Friday the 13th, and Wet Hot American Summer, camp counselors must struggle against a pop-culture image of camp that includes food fights, panty raids, and crazed killers. Yes, I know, the last time someone actually flew underwear up a flagpole was 1965, but most employers don’t know that.
Take Camp Skills to School
on September 7, 2011
Millions of parents chose camp for their child or teen because of the immense benefits of the experience. Not only does camp foster making new friends and learning 21st century life skills like independence, problem-solving, and teamwork, but it’s also fun! Reform Jews embrace Tisha B’Av
on August 15, 2011
Many Jews around the world filed into synagogues Monday evening and Tuesday to observe the holy day of Tisha B’Av. They sat on floors or low benches. They read from the mournful Book of Lamentations.
And from sun down to sun down, they fasted.
Many Jews, that is, but certainly not all.
Jewish Camps Seek Balance in New, Tricky Terrain
on August 12, 2011
Driven by that conviction, today’s camp directors go to great lengths to prove that Jewish camp can compete with a plethora of other options. From marketing to fundraising, they’re developing a “for-profit mentality” in hopes of staying both cutting-edge and affordable.
Holding On and Letting Go
on June 20, 2011
We wish to give our children the opportunities to grow, to become more independent and forge out their own path in this world. When you are raising a child with special needs, it seems as if they are even more vulnerable, in greater need of those protective wings being placed around them. it would make sense that in that balancing act between holding on and letting go… we might choose to tip the scales in favor of holding on, being protective and creating a more insular world for our special needs children.
