The Olim Program brings together staff members from four URJ Camps (Coleman, Eisner, Crane Lake and Harlam) for three weekend-long kallot (retreats) at each summer camp. This two-year program at our respective summer camps allows us to become leaders in the camp community and strengthen our skills as staff members. This commitment also provides useful feedback and suggestions from a staff member perspective.
Habitat for Humanity: A Camper’s Reflection
on July 28, 2011
On Wednesday, June 29th a group of Olim Campers traveled to Springfield, MA where they participated in Habitat for Humanity,an organization committed to provided homes for those struggling to make ends meet. The campers did yard-work, painting, and cleanup to create a new home for those in need. The project was planned in partnership with Telem, a Boston based Jewish organization, focused on integrating community service. The following is a reflection on this experience by Betsy, an Olim Camper and a peice written by two Olim campers that was read at Shabbat T’filah.
Avodah’s Crews
on July 25, 2011
Avodahnikim, or work/study participants at G.U.C.I., participate in four crews for two weeks each during the summer. K’ton, Kitchen, Maintenance, Office, Pool & Mirpaah (infirmary), Migdal, and Canoeing crews are the seven options that Avodahnikim can be assigned to. Each crew has a staff member who directs the group to help them accomplish the work and tasks.
If I Am Only For Me… Thoughts on Forming Social Responsibility at Camp
on July 21, 2011
From the small things to the larger things, raising awareness is always a positive thing at any age. Three years ago, I learned that responsibility is not an inherent trait and that one instance of tragedy could open my eyes to a whole world of it, if only someone would help me see. That “someone” was the same “someone” that would listen to my problems and help me through them. That someone was the URJ. And through that kindness and trust I was finally ready to listen to and help others with their own problems. I’m glad to see that the legacy of kindness leading into responsibility is still continuing to grow today.
Fixing the World- Avodah Style
on July 11, 2011
Tikun Olam has always been a strong ideal in Judaism. This idea is found most prominently at camp in the Avodah program. Avodah translates to service, which is exactly the role they play in camp.

Solidarity March for Gilad Shalit
on July 1, 2011
On June 25th, everyone at Camp Coleman came together to show our support for Gilad Shalit on the fifth anniversary of his abduction. Our very own Journalism Specialist who is part of our Mishlachat (Israeli Delegation) wrote a piece about the events. It has been published in the Atlanta Jewish News, but you can also read it right here on our very own blog:
Camp Coleman: All-Camp Mitzvah Project
on June 27, 2011
This summer Coleman campers packed one extra item to bring to camp. The extra item didn’t take up much room in each individual camper’s luggage. Yet, when added to all the items that other campers and staff brought this summer a huge collection began to amass in the chadar ohel – the dining hall. All in all, 10 barrels were filled.
What’s the story with Sustainability Man?
on June 20, 2011
Greening Greene Family Camp has always been a priority of staff and campers. This is our summer home and we want to make sure it’s around forever and in it’s best shape! But sometimes, even when something’s really, really important we need little reminders to do the right thing, to turn the lights off EVERY time we leave the cabin and to walk that 5 extra feet to recycle the plastic bottle rather than throw it away.
