by Robbie Berg, Nachshonim Programmer
This year camp added a new unit, Solelim, and campers entering 6th grade this year will always be able to say that they were part of the first Solelim unit. I was lucky to have been part of the first Nachshonim unit in 2004 as a camper in B4B- and now I am living once again in B4B as the Nachshonim Programmer.
Nachshonim means leaders, named after Nachshon ben Aminadav, the first Israelite to step foot in the Red Sea before Moses parted it. This year Nachshonim are learning about important Jewish leaders throughout history and modern times; on our very first night we told jokes like Jackie Mason, threw pitches like Sandy Koufax, and made parachutes like Hannah Senesh.
Nachshonim has also been leading camp in their maturity in discussing ethical dilemmas, accepting differences, and combating bullying. Eight years ago my counselors would put us to sleep every night with the song “Kol Galgal” by the Israeli band Shotei Hanavua. Last night I played the same song to put my campers to sleep. Old traditions continue and new traditions will be made by the amazing leaders of Nachshonim 2012!
