Summer 2013 may be over and Summer 2014 still 266 days away, but Coleman continues to serve as a destination for many groups. Between our annual Family Camp, a Davis Academy 8th Grade Retreat, Temple retreats, Shalom B’harim’s High Holiday services, and much more, 201 Camp Coleman Drive has certainly had a lot of activity since Second Session closing on August 4th. Next month we have another exciting event coming up: Coleman’s First Annual 3rd-6th Grade Retreat!
Much of my personal Jewish Camp experience as a child happened at retreats like this. Jewish kids and teens from all over Orange County, California, where I grew up, gathered for retreats during the school year- a little taste of Jewish Summer Camp during the school year. I would count down the days until these retreats, so excited to pack my duffle bag for a weekend at Camp, see my friends from the region, sing and dance at song session, and feast on the delicious challah and apple butter (though now nothing compares to Nellie’s Apple Brown Betty). I am the Jewish person and Assistant Camp Director I am today in great part because of these retreats.
I’m thrilled now to be planning a Coleman retreat with Sara Beth Berman, the Nadiv Educator at URJ Camp Coleman and the Davis Academy. Additionally, some of our fantastic summer staff members will join us in leading fun Coleman activities and programs that campers know and love. The weekend is a chance for Jewish 3rd-6th Graders from the Atlanta area and beyond to reunite with friends from this summer, meet new friends, and experience Camp Coleman during the school year; in fact, the theme of the weekend is Instacamp: #ConnectatColeman, emphasizing the Jewish values in friendship and how connections and friendships are holy. The retreat will be October 25-27, and more details including a sample schedule and how to register can be found on our website. I’m truly ecstatic to be holding a retreat like this at Coleman, and I’m looking forward to seeing returning campers and new faces alike!
PS There is an Early Bird registration discount until September 27.
