by Rabbi Melissa Buyer. Rabbi Buyer is currently the Director of Lifelong Learning at Temple Israel of New York City. Rabbi Buyer served as a faculty member for URJ Eisner and Crane Lake Camps in Summer 2012 and is a proud Crane Lake Parent. Everything depends on the person who stands in front of the classroom. The teacher is not an automatic fountain from which intellectual beverages may be obtained. The teacher is either a witness or a stranger. To guide a pupil into the promised land, the teacher must have been there themselves. When asking themselves: Do I stand [...]
CLC’s T’filah Goes Visual
on July 13, 2012
By Sarah Lauing, Director of Jewish Life Sarah is a member of our year-round team, and our Nadiv Educator will spend summers with CLC and work throughout the year with both Eisner and Crane Lake Camps as well as with Temple Shaarey Tefila of New York City as the family educator. Sarah brings an incredible amount of knowledge and Ruach to the CLC community. During our daily morning t’filah, campers normally hold laminated prayer cards so they can follow along with the service. But not yesterday. Instead, throughout the service, gorgeous photographs of camp were projected on a screen [...]
Reflections on Our First Shabbat
on July 3, 2012
by Rabbi Devorah Marcus Rabbi Marcus is the Associate Rabbi at Temple Beth El of Great Neck, NY and a faculty member this summer at Crane Lake Camp. After days of packing, arriving, unpacking, name-gaming, group-mixing, swim-testing, program writing, and community building, our first Shabbat came barreling towards us at the speed of camp. I love that even though I was a young camper over twenty years ago, camp Shabbat is just as beautiful, just as inspired, and just as sacred as I remember. For returning staff, and campers, it’s the joy of being clean and wearing our Shabbat best. [...]
Meet Our 2012 Senior Staff!
on June 3, 2012
Sarah Lauing: Director of Jewish Life Hi Crane Lake! I just received my Masters in Jewish Education from Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles. I’m excited to join the Crane Lake family as a Nadiv Educator, a full time position shared between camp and Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City. Born and raised in Palo Alto, CA, I’m a California girl at heart, but with great love for the East Coast as well. I attended Middlebury College in Vermont and am thrilled to be returning to this part of the country. I’m most looking forward to celebrating Shabbat at [...]

Whether it’s collecting baseball cards or singing on stage, everyone has something they love to do. It happens that my love was – and still is – Jewish youth programming. Judaism was incorporated into my life from a very young age, and going to temple was a regular activity for my family. I used to spend Fridays in the back row of the synagogue playing cards or board games, and though I [...]
