Camp George Works with Gift of Life

Hey Camp George!

At camp, we are always looking for ways to give back and focusing on how we can be the best Jewish role models possible. During staff week of summer 2012, our staff were presented with an opportunity to complete both of these goals, when they were visited by two volunteers from Gift of Life. This charity, works to find bone marrow matches who can donate to those in need. Gift of Life has worked with many of our sister URJ camps and we were thrilled to be able to participate in their Canadian Camp Tour. To hear our Dean of Jewish Living, Rabbi Noam Katz’s perspective on our involvement, click below to see his appearance in the Gift of Life Canadian Camp Tour video.

In less than 3 years, over 3000 people have been swabbed at summer camps throughout the US and Canada because of the Gift of Life “Finding a Hero in You at Camp” program. So far, 17 matches have been identified for patients worldwide.  Over 600 people have been swabbed at URJ Camps and 4 matches have been found for patients in need. The URJ partnership has helped save lives and can continue to do so with your help!

Currently, Gift of Life is searching for a match for a four year old girl named Jayden  from Montreal.  At camp, we always talk about the importance of community and how that translates into not only working together, but supporting each other in all that we do. Although not a member of our camp community, Jayden is a member of our Jewish community and so it is also our obligation to help support her and her family in their time of need.

If you’ve never been swabbed and are between the ages of 17-50, we encourage you to look into attending the upcoming Bone Marrow drives in Toronto. Friday April 12th 10: AM: Get swabbed and help to save Jayden’s life. The Gift of Life drive is being held on Sunday April 21st from 10am-5pm at two locations: .Bialik Hebrew Day School-  2760 Bathurst St, Toronto and at Aish Thornhill Community Shul- 949 Clark Avenue West, Vaughan.

–          With thanks to all that have been swabbed.
