A Community Shabbat To Remember

By: Mindy Webber, Development Director

On August 9th  it was my pleasure to travel up to camp for the day to spend Shabbat with some important members of our community.  I would rate this as one of the top reasons why I love my job.  I had the opportunity to see Camp George through the eyes of our donors and community members, and I was proud to show them what their support has helped to build.

Guests of the Community Shabbat were delighted to participate in a typical day at camp.  Their day started off with a personal tour of the new cabins in the Junior Camper Village, followed by  lunch in the dining hall and activities such as water ski, ropes and arts and crafts.  During some down-time, Jeff Rose and Karen Kollins shared some summer highlights, and David Abrams, Chair of the Camp George Steering Committee, reiterated the importance of community support and engagement.  David also shared some of Camp George’s upcoming capital projects such as:

  • Completing the junior camper village
  • Renovating the old dorms and building a new infirmary
  • Building a new dining hall
  • Building new CIT cabins

We were grateful as well to have Rabbi Daniel Freelander (Senior Vice President, URJ) join us for the day.  Through his remarks, Rabbi Freelander was able to illustrate how the URJ Camping system is part of a much larger effort to enhance engagement amongst Jewish youth, and share some of the initiatives that are coming our way in the coming months. We are fortunate to have Rabbi Freelander as a friend of Camp George and value his passion and commitment to help us in any way that he can.

The highlight of the day was of course participating in a Shabbat celebration that only Camp George can deliver.  Activities included a Shabbat walk, services at the Beit Tfillah, Shabbat dinner with campers, staff and new friends, and an incredible outdoor Super Spesh Song Sesh.  The ruach was contagious as guests joined campers and staff in singing and dancing to Israeli music.

Our goal through this experience was to connect back with our donors and community members, and to show them what their support has helped to build.  We are excited to continue growing Camp George, to ensure our kids have the best Jewish home away from home possible, and are grateful to so many of you who will help  to make this happen.

Look out for a Save the Date soon for next summer’s Community Shabbat at Camp George.  We hope even more of you can join us to celebrate the incredible camp built by our community, and to see some of the new developments you have made possible through your support.

As always, if you have any question, or would like to discuss how you can lend your support, please feel free to contact me directly at 416-638-2635 ext. 225 or mwebber@urj.org. Together with Jeff Rose (Camp Director), David Abrams (Steering Committee Chair) and and Sandi Smith (Vice Chair), I’m excited to see what the upcoming year will bring.

Shana Tova.
