Yom Israel

Monday we celebrated a very special day, Yom Israel. The day was planned and hosted by our four Israelis on staff. Campers gathered in the Mercaz Tarbut to watch a movie about Israel and to learn a little bit more about our Israelis here at camp. Then they were split up into units to do individual programs that helped teach the campers about places in Israel, as well as the history. Dinner was a meal straight out of Israel. There was shawarma, falafel, pita, and fresh fruit! The campers loved eating Israeli food and trying new things. Following dinner was [...]

Yom Sport Kallah Bet 2012!

It’s that time of session again, Yom Sport! Yesterday was the day that all of the campers wait for and it was one of the best Yom Sports’ we have seen! Campers woke up to a regularly scheduled day and attended breakfast, until Reid Myers, Program Director, lost his clipboard. Reid asked all of the Unit Heads if they had taken it and then asked all of Avodah. After realizing that his trusty clipboard was gone and that it held all of the days’ programs he announced that it would be Yom Sport! The captains then came running out of [...]

The Music Makers

Most of us know that songleaders make camp go round. We thought we would introduce to you our Head Songleader for the summer, Kyle Bernstein, and tell you a little bit about the songleading program. Kyle will tell you about how music is important at camp and why he is head songleader here- Music has always been an important part of the Goldman Union Camp community. This was apparent to me when I first came through the front gate thirteen summers ago. I now have the opportunity to allow this magical aspect of camp to grow and foster as the [...]

It’s Kallah Bet Opening Day!

Today was Opening Day for Kallah Bet and we couldn’t have been more excited! At 2 p.m. the first bus pulled into camp with excited campers and parents. Although there are many returning campers, we have a number of new campers as well. We thought we would give you a bit of an inside view into what Opening Day is like for new campers.  And as staff we have all been there, that first year of camp, and we remember it like it was yesterday. The morning of Opening Day is always a mix of emotions. We all remember being [...]

Kallah Aleph 2012 Comes to an End

Yesterday was the end of Kallah Aleph 2012.  By nine a.m. families flooded camp and the cabin areas were packed with people. It was gratifying for staff to see the campers embrace their families and tell them all about the wonderful summer they just had! And it was a wonderful summer indeed, full of many different activities. Every unit learned about being Partners with God in Shiur, our educational program. They discussed Jewish values and inspired each other with their individual opinions. They also had two bunk nights that helped them build relationships with their cabin mates and counselors. Additionally [...]

Yom Tiyul Kallah Aleph 2012

Shalom! My name is Rachael Pass and I’m the Geza Unit Head (Geza is our unit for rising 7th and 8th graders). My favorite part of the summer every session is, and always has been, Geza’s Yom Tiyul—our two-day, offsite camping trip. Traditionally, we go off camp to a national park, lay out two giant tarps on the ground (one for boys and one for girls) and sleep under the open stars. I’ve always told staff that Yom Tiyul is where we learn the true meaning of “flexibility” and “going with the flow,” because something always, always changes during the [...]

Kesher Kallah Aleph 2012

Last Monday Anaf packed up and shipped out for an exciting three-day camping trip off camp called, Kesher. Anaf had been preparing for the trip all session long. Each morning they would attend their program that prepared them for the trip. They learned how to set up tents, turn on their lanterns, and plan programs for their group. By doing these things everyday, they were ready for the big trip. The first day is always the most exciting. The campers settled into the camping ground, at Hardin Ridge Recreation Area, with their group and group leaders. They built their tents [...]

Shoresh Day Off!

Yesterday was the greatly anticipated Shoresh Day Off! This is a day that only Shoresh campers get to have away from their normal schedule. It is full of fun activities and a trip off camp to an exciting location. Shoresh Day Off this year was a little different than in the past because it was Reverse Yom. Everything Shoresh did yesterday was backwards. The day started off with the counselors in each cabin waking their campers up with the Shema, which is usually a bedtime ritual here. Then they headed up to the Mercaz Chevrah for dinner and a songsession. [...]

We All Need Some Tikkun

Today Shoresh travelled all over camp to learn about Tikkun, which means to repair. They learned about how it is important to repair their community and themselves! Shoresh started at the sports field and were asked to make a choice when given a scenario, like a choose your own adventure shiur. They were first asked to choose between going to help at a homeless shelter or staying home to rest, when they had the flu. They were also given situations about family and friends. Once they had picked they were asked to move to a different location to talk [...]

Goodbye Garin Kallah Aleph

Today marks the end of the first two weeks of first session. This also means that Garin Aleph is over. During their Shabbat free time yesterday, Garin packed to go home. Their luggage was stored on the Mercaz Tochnit, reminding us that soon their parents would be picking them up. Even though the youngest unit on camp was only here for two weeks, they had an eventful stay. They climbed the midgal, went on Tikun Olam, led a service, had bunk night, and even performed in Chug Presentations. Many Garin campers wrote in their service parts that they had learned [...]
