By Brett Salus and Emma West, Chalutzim Campers
Earlier this month, Chalutzim had the incredible opportunity to visit a local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club of America. Being chosen to write about and share our experience is a true honor to both of us, but seeing these children’s smiles as we walked through the entrance was an even greater honor.
Once we were settled, our counselors split us into two groups to give us the chance to be more interactive with more kids. From hoola hoop games to story time, we were both fortunate to make a special connection with one child.
I, Brett, met my new friend Brandon, who is ten years old. As we played the hoola hoop game, Brandon kept saying, “We got this! We got this!” Seeing him so enthusiastic made me want to continue to volunteer.
And I, Emma, thought the kids were so nice and respectful, especially during story time. My buddy Latrey (also known as Toutie) sat in my lap while listening to the book. Then, we had a great time while doing the Chicken Dance and singing “Green Grass Grows All Around.” I definitely want to continue to volunteer and follow a career that interacts with youth.
Once we had to say our adieus, there were so many hugs in the room! The day will always be a treasured memory, and it was an unforgettable highlight of Chalutzim 2012. We look forward to further supporting them as we learnabout fundraising and allocating tzedakah in future evening programs.

I am so happy to hear about your fabulous service experience and glad that Jacobs camp is part of the greater community. It sounds like your day with the boys and girls club was mutually beneficial. As an elementary school teacher, I know that wonderful feeling of clicking with a child that you describe. I look forward to the day when my son, Josh, currently a Garin camper, can participate in such a fulfilling experience. Thank you Brett and Emma for being great role models for my son and the other younger campers.
Sincerely,
Dale Foster
