Although they are all at different stages in their lives, and come to camp from many different places, Jacobs Camp’s counselors share many of the same emotions toward Jacobs as their campers do.
First year counselors, like first year campers, have a nervous and excited feeling in the pits of their stomachs before arriving, caused by the anticipation of getting to know new people and trying many new things.
And, like returning campers, our returning staff wait an entire year, anxiously looking forward to the moment they pass under the “Henry S. Jacobs Camp” arch to reunite with friends and return to their home away from home.
For this summer’s staff team, the wait is finally over. Yesterday marked the beginning of our week-long Staff Orientation, where counselors learn lessons like what makes a good counselor, how to combat homesickness, the ins and outs of safety procedures, and most importantly, how to ensure their campers have the best summer possible. They will also be busy planning programs, inspecting & testing our facilities (hey, someone needs to test the Wet Willie, right?), and making sure everything is in tip-top shape. Not only are they learning about what makes camp tick, but this week also jumpstarts the friendships between staff members that will last a lifetime, just like the relationships campers foster during their time here.
For our staff, the anticipation about getting to camp is over – they made it! It’s summer! But, with all of the preparations underway, a new type of anticipation emerges: Anticipation for the arrival of our campers – which, for Olim A and First Session, is just a week away! Our counselors and staff are just as excited for opening day as our campers are. It’s hard to believe it’s just a week away.
We can’t wait to see all of you here!
