Leonard Cohen - prolific songwriter, singer, musician, poet, novelist, and philosopher - is a music hero. He's been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is also a Companion of the Order of Canada - our country's highest civilian honour. These aren't mere platitudes bestowed without good reason: his career spans six decades and is unwaveringly progressing; Lou Reed, front-man of The Velvet Underground, has labeled Cohen as being amongst "the highest and most influential echelon of songwriters." Not bad for an observant Jew from the Montreal suburbs.

Today was our farewell day. We went to Café Du Monde and enjoyed a delicious breakfast with the people we have gotten to become so close with over the past week. Before we parted ways we all joined arms in a circle by the water and each person commented on their experience on our trip. We heard things like, "we were glad to have the opportunity to help out those in need", "we were happy to have accomplished something truly miraculous", and also "it felt amazing to get to know each other and create friendships that will undoubtedly last for many years to come."

After the circle exercise, we proceeded to begin to say goodbye to the people who were on the early flights. It's always hard to say goodbye to people you have become close with, and this trip was no exception. Saying goodbye to everyone was surprisingly upsetting and it made us realize just how much we were going to miss everyone. This trip has been a life changing experience and one we will carry with us forever. We've never felt like we've done so much and made so many great friends in such a short period of time in our lives.

Sincerely,
Michael Bacsik & Charles Cho

alize_blog.jpgToday we arrived at the site early in the morning.  Our friends from Iowa were already hard at work, so we jumped in and helped them.  Almost all of the painting was already finished, so we started applying a second coat of paint to the trim around the door and window frames.

While that was drying, we worked to scrape the lead paint off of the wrought iron banister on the front steps. Fearing lead poisoning, we all suited up in our white body suits (provided by ACORN), and put on our face and eye masks.  After we had removed all the peeling lead paint, we applied some very thick, black paint to the banister.

The banister looked as good as new, but the rest of the house needed some touching-up on the spots we had initially missed.  We walked around the house and applied paint to the tricky spots--for instance, the particularly difficult spots were the corners by the window frames, underneath the slats of the siding, and the baseboards on the house that had a wire fence stapled to them.

Once the paint was evenly applied to the entire house (we made sure not to miss a single spot--Max actually complimented Mike's and my attention to detail), we worked to clear the backyard.

When we first arrived at the site, the yard was completely overgrown with mature weeds.  As a group, we worked to pull out the weeds from the root (this was very taxing), pick up trash from the area, and rake and sweep the area.  By the time we had finished, the yard, Lionel came over to commend our fine work; the yard was spotless!

Sincerely,
Aliza
