Participant Perspectives: Leah Hennes on Tefillah, Leadership, and the Impact of Camp

The tron was dimly lit as we gathered around the glow of candles and songleaders. We had just ended our adrenaline fueled day of color wars and the satisfied smiles of campers began to find their space on the ruach-worn wooden floor. A form of acoustic evening services began and progressed with a beautifully relaxed mood. We arrived at the Shema. The group began in whispered tones and repeated the prayer, growing in volume after every round.

Every day, different members of the community lead tefillot using a variety of modalities—storytelling, visual and performing art, highly musical tefillot, creative Torah services, etc… This past Thursday, trading in our talitot for towels and yoga mats, we spent an hour focusing on Birchot Hashachar, the blessings that thank God for allowing our vital organs, arteries and veins to function properly.
