Thought for Shabbat

Melissas’ Message | Shabbat Pinchas | July 11, 2014

Our third Shabbat of the summer will certainly be our most memorable. As our participants prepare this afternoon to enjoy their final Shabbat together, there are so many incredible moments to reflect upon from this past week. Evening programs focused on healthy decision making, the environment, and democracy. Hagshama helped our teens learn coping mechanisms for stress and equipped them with skills to create more open and welcoming communities. And one of the highlights of the week was Trip Day! Each Major visited a site in New York City that helped them build skills in their specific area of interest. Our teens enjoyed the sites of Times Square in the afternoon. And each teen enjoyed one of Broadway shows, including Jersey Boys, Wicked, Rocky, Kinky Boots, Cinderella, and Aladdin. So overall, we have so much to be thankful for as we head into this Shabbat.

We had another week enhanced by outstanding faculty, all of whom donate their time to elevate our program and the community. We are so grateful that the following Jewish leaders were able to be with us throughout the first week of camp:

  • Micha Biton, Artist in Residence, ISRAEL
  • Rabbi Jordana Chernow-Reader. Temple Beth Torah, Ventura, CA
  • Rabbi Joshua Cohen, Larchmont Temple, Larchmont, NY
  • Lea Coleman, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, Indianapolis, IN
  • Rona Goldstein, NFTY-Northern Regional Advisor, Minnetonka, MN

  • Rabbi David Young, Congregation B’nai Tzedek, Fountain Valley, AZ
  • Cantor Natalie Young Temple Beth El of South Orange County, Irvine, CA

It has been a terrific week, and we look forward to making our last days of camp meaningful in every single moment. This summer we have created magic in the community because of the amazing teens who are here, and our talented staff who support them along this sacred journey. We have all been mutually blessed by one another’s presence, and we look forward to this next week together.

Shabbat shalom,

Melissa
