NFTY-MV: Creating a Community for Purim

By Beth Lipschutz, Regional Director of Youth Engagement

MV Purim PartyPurim is a joyous holiday meant to be celebrated with family, friends and festivities. What better way to celebrate than with a community wide party just for teens? As the NFTY-MV Regional Director of Youth Engagement, I was able to facilitate the collaboration of several Jewish youth organizations this Denver party called Pinball Purim. I organized a planning committee that included representatives from NFTY-MV, Rocky Mountain BBYO, Hebrew Education Alliance, Jewish Student Connection and the Jewish Community Center Teen Network.  Teens and adults from the different organizations met several times over a period of a few months to decide on a location, theme and how to advertise.  We were able to rent out a video game warehouse for the evening and had over 100 teens in attendance, some of whom were not affiliated with a particular organization.

At the event, we played as much pinball, Centipede, Rampage, Pac Man, and air hockey as we could fit into a couple of hours, all for free, thanks to The Game Exchange. And of course, a Purim Party isn’t really a celebration without costumes! Our theme was decades and teens came dressed up in clothes from the 60′s, 70′s, 80′s and 90′s. Check out some of the teens who entered our costume contest. We set new high score records, ate hamantashen and made new friends! Thanks to all of the organizations in Denver who worked together to make this possible.

We are looking forward to seeing you all again on April 28 for JServe!
