By Olivia Kessler, NFTY-MAR Social Action Vice President
Weeks after JELLO (Jewish Educational Leadership & Learning Opportunities), I still find myself smiling uncontrollably over the fact that at MAR’s Asefah (plenary session), we not only passed the first resolution we have seen in many years, but we passed a meaningful social action resolution to help a member of our community. The resolution was to donate all money we fundraise in the “jugs” at JELLO and Fall Kallah 2013 to HelpHOPElive in honor of Ethan Kadish, a member of our community who remains severely injured from the unimaginable tragedy he faced this summer.
Below is the text of the actual resolution, discussing the details of the cause, and how vital it is that we help Ethan and his family in their recovery.
Resolution to donate all money NFTY-MAR fundraises at JELLO 2013 and Fall Kallah 2013 to the non-profit HelpHOPElive in honor of one of our community members, Ethan Kadish.
Background: On June 29th, 2013, the peacefulness of a Shabbat afternoon at URJ Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI) in Zionsville, Indiana, was shattered by an unimaginable tragedy when a lightning strike from an otherwise clear sky left three campers unresponsive on the athletic field. Two of those families have thankfully been able to see their children recover and return home; one even returned to camp. However, the third camper, Ethan Kadish, remains hospitalized in Cincinnati. Ethan’s recovery has seen a series of successes that began with his survival, and that includes open eyes, independent breathing, and reflexive response. Ethan is in the care of a fantastic medical team and undergoes several hours of intense physical therapy every day. His family looks forward to the day that they can take him home; but they also know that once home, the challenges will continue. Ethan will still require regular therapy and constant medical care, items that will likely no longer be covered by insurance once he has left the hospital. The remarkable strength of the Kadish family has rested largely on their incredible sense of faith…faith in the healing power of God, faith in the skill and wisdom of Ethan’s physicians, and faith in the support of the URJ and Goldman Union Camp communities. It is imperative that we respond to this tragedy that directly affected members of our community and our duty as caring and engaged NFTYites to support this member of our community in his recovery.
WHEREAS the Jewish commandment of Bikur Cholim teaches us not only to visit the sick, but to also extend aid to the sick;
WHEREAS our tradition teaches “Kol Yisrael arevim zeh b’zeh”-כל ישראל ערבים זה בזה-that all Jews are responsible for one another. As Reformed Jews and NFTYites, it is our responsibility to send a strong message to Ethan and his family that we stand together with them during this time of need;
WHEREAS Judaism supports the text that if one person is able to save another and does not save him he transgresses the commandment, “Neither shall you stand idly by the blood of your neighbor” from Leviticus 19:16;
WHEREAS in Deuteronomy 15:7-8 it reads ” If, however, there is a needy person among you, one of your kin in any of your settlements in the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not harden your heart and shut your hand against your needy kin. Rather, you must open your hand and lend them sufficient for whatever they need” restating that it is our responsibly to support a member in need of our community;
WHEREAS NFTY is founded on the principle of COMMUNITY – KEHILAH – קהילה it is imperative that we help a member of the community that is need of support and funding in order to receive adequate medical care for the tragedy that struck him;
WHEREAS NFTY is founded on the principle of REPAIRING THE WORLD – TIKKUN OLAM – תיקון עולם it is our duty as Jews who hold a deep value in repairing the world to take measures to help those who were affected;
THEREFOR LET IT BE RESOLVED THAT NFTY-MAR donates money we fundraise at JELLO 2013 and Fall Kallah 2013 to HelpHOPElive in honor of one of our beloved community members, Ethan Kadish; and;
LET IT FURTHER BE RESOLVED THAT NFTY continues to be a community that reacts responsibility and immediately to tragedy’s in our community.
