Is your Facebook feed full of mixed facts and opinions on the situation in Israel and Gaza, and you’re not really sure what to think? Take a look at the last week’s Webinar and Q and A session discussing the situation:
A rocket is fired. You have 15 seconds to find shelter. This is the reality right now in Ashkelon, in Ashdod, in Be’er Sheva, Jerusalem, Hebron, Shaar HaNegev. This has been the reality for the last 8 days in Tel Aviv, in Modi’in, and in Gaza City. This is the reality for our brothers and sisters in Israel. Teens our age in the IDF are waiting on bases to see where a rocket will strike next. Teens our age in Gaza are being used as shields to protect an oppressive regime. A rocket is fired. No matter who you are, you have 15 seconds, sometimes less, to find shelter.
NFTY does not support the killing of innocent citizens and NFTY does not want the back-and-forth rocket launchings to continue.
NFTYites are connected to Israel, and NFTYites are connected to the entire Middle East. Some NFTYites feel the connection from sessions of Israeli dance, others have been on or have friends on Israel trips. Others have friends or family who are affected every day by the conflict in Israel and Gaza. Regardless of the origin of our connection, our hearts are in the East with the 15 year old boy who lost his uncle, or the grandmother who lost her grandson. A rocket is fired. You have 15 seconds to find shelter.
This issue feels like it’s close to home because it is close to home.
Share this post, retweet the tweet, have conversations, and be proud to be a NFTYite who joins with our movement to say that we want the violence to end.
May the one who makes peace in the heavens, make peace for us, for all of Israel, for all who dwell on earth, and let us say, Amen.
Help us reclaim the color Red”!
“Tzeva adom”- “color red” is the military code phrase stated on radio and television for the sirens that are heard throughout the day and night which tell us to move to bomb shelters and other safe areas.
Sha’ar Hanegev is a new Reform community in the western-northern Negev, most of its members are from the Kibbutzim on the border with Gaza Strip and are the first to get hits from Hamas rockets. Their rabbi, Yael Karie, wrote yesterday that it would be great to have our movement post “happy red” pictures on their Facebook community page. We would love for you to join us in posting pictures to your facebook and twitter with #ReclaimTheColorRed and #NFTY
Here are some other ways you can stay involved and informed:
- You can download the iPhone app “red alert” which track on real time where terrorist’s rockets attack on Israel’s cities happens.
- Read as many media resources, at least one of each side:
- Ask questions – talk with your rabbis, educators, camp directors, counselors, and friends.
The Reform Movement has partnered with the Conservative Movement & Jewish Federations of North America to raise funds to help our brothers & sisters in Israel. Please visit and consider supporting this cause.
Great blogs we’ve seen around the web:
- Rabbi Josh Strom at Temple Shaaray Tefila in Manhattan, NY
- An article about how social media post both help and hinder public discussion about the operation in Gaza
- From Rabbi Josh Weinberg of ARZA – an article with some background and history of Hamas
