Open any newspaper. Immigration is a “crisis” that is nowhere near being resolved. We see other crises boiling at home and abroad, from Ferguson to Damascus to Jerusalem to Gaza. If we use the connections we have to multiply our influence, we will become what we always say we are. We will be a movement.

COMING SOON TO A BLOG NEAR YOU: MVP MONDAY!!

I’ve come to realize that in NFTY, we often say we should “start with why,” a quote taken from Simon Sinek’s informational TedTalk (insert link here). All of the greatest organizations, all of the greatest leaders in the world don’t believe in first defining the problem. They believe that they must first understand why they do what they do. This holds true in NFTY, because we continually progress and change. I believe we should “start with why.”

Kutz leadership

How Can We Redefine Leadership?

NFTY is made up of over 7,000 Jewish teens from across North America. In each of the 19 regions, there is a wide range of teens who serve on their regional board. Each has something special to add to their position, and each recognizes their role as a leader. However, what about the other teens in our movement? Why shouldn’t they have the opportunity to serve their region, too? These questions came up a lot during my time at the URJ Kutz Camp this summer, where I had the opportunity to learn from almost 80 passionate Regional and Temple Youth Group leaders in the Leadership Academy.

The following is a D’var Torah given by NFTY President Debbie Rabinovich on the first day of the summer session at the URJ Kutz Camp. This week’s parsha, Chukat, is filled with contradictions. We just stood at Sinai, completely healthy and whole, and received the Torah, which brings us life. Suddenly we are confronted by the deaths of Miriam and Aaron.
