Within just the first week, I had already made so many new friends, and over the past month, have been lucky enough to live not only with my two incredible roommates, but with a beautiful house full of people I now consider my family.
Southern Jewish Life 101
on July 19, 2012
In the Torah portion of the week we were in Birmingham, we read about Balak and how when an obstacle is in your way, it might be there for a reason. Prejudice in the South has, in my opinion, made that community stronger. The people there have had to deal with hate and hardship, and have continued to survive. Birmingham has changed since the time of Martin Luther King Jr., and while prejudice may still exist, we have the strength to overcome it.
1 Year Later: How BAMC Changed My Life
on July 18, 2012
The biggest impact it had was this new attitude I have, which is that I pretty much agree to try anything. If someone asks me to help with something, or to try something new, even if I don’t necessarily feel 100% excited about it, I like to take part. It’s surprising how much you can enjoy something just by doing what you might not think you want to do. I learned to put myself into new situations that seem weird or scary, and just go with it…because, seriously, why not?
Where We Came From, and Where We’re Going

The Recipe for BAMC Love
on July 2, 2012
Now that we have become familiar with our surroundings, it time for Bay Area Mitzvah Corps to make a difference. Today marks our first official day of volunteering, and I could not be more excited. I am so eager to see what the next 3 weeks bring, considering the amazing memories that have already been made.
A Taste of the South
on July 1, 2012
All in all the day was nothing short of a success, each of us able to get that taste of New Orleans that we have all yearned for. Days like that one just make you wonder what else the South has in store for us.

Although this summer is my last summer that I am able to participate in Mitzvah Corps, I promise anyone reading this right now: my work is not done.
Stepping Back and Letting Mitzvah Corps Shine
on June 24, 2012
I move from hearing about the staff’s excitement and enthusiasm to actually feeling their energy. And these three days lead into what is the most challenging, and yet most fulfilling, part of my job: stepping back and letting it all happen.
Mardi Gras, French Quarter, and Birmingham – oh my!
on July 5, 2011
We climbed into boats and toured around the bayous of Louisiana. Our tour guide taught us about the ecosystem of the swamps and all the animals that call it home. The highlight of the tour was seeing Brutus, a 14 foot alligator eat marshmallows off a stick!
