A Shabbat Twofer: More Consultation Speakers Announced
First up: Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, New Jersey will join us on Monday, April 20th. Booker, a Washington, D.C. native, won a sweeping victory in the 2006 election for Newark mayor, securing nearly 72 percent of the popular vote. Since assuming office, he's been credited with bringing a number of positive changes to Newark, a city unfortunately all too well-known for its high levels of both crime and poverty. Booker's drive to better the town he oversees has garnered national attention and admiration for both his leadership and the city itself, attracting write-ups in publications from the Washington Post to Esquire magazine.
We'll also be joined by Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who will address the Consultation on Conscience on Tuesday, April 21st. Sen. Collins, who assumed office in 1997, has earned a reputation as a lawmaker willing to work across party lines to reach consensus on important issues. She is the ranking members of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and is a proponent of a number of issues of importance to the Reform Movement, including stem-cell research, reproductive choice, environmental protection and LGBT equality.
Both Mayor Booker and Senator Collins promise to provide unique insight on the topics that matter most to social justice-minded Reform Jews. Check out the speakers we've already announced, and stay tuned to next week for additional announcements about our Consultation on Conscience speakers!
