Big News! Our Keynote Speaker Is...
Our Sunday night keynote speaker will be renowned economist Larry Summers, Director of the White House's National Economic Council. Summers is also well-known for his previous role as Harvard University's 27th President, a position he held from 2001 to 2006, and is currently a professor at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. But Summers' impressive list of accomplishments doesn't end there: He served on the Council of Economic Advisers under President Ronald Reagan, as an economic adviser to the Dukakis Presidential campaign, and as Chief Economist for the World Bank. For During the Clinton Administration, Summers served as Undersecretary for International Affairs and later as Secretary of the Treasury.
Economics runs in Summers' blood: He comes from a family of economists, including both parents, who are professors of the subject, and two Nobel laureate uncles. At the young age of just 16, Summers pulled a Doogie Howser, attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with intentions of studying physics but soon switching to economics instead. He attended graduate school at Harvard and received his PhD. in 1982, and the next year became one of the youngest tenured professors in Harvard's history at age 28.
Summers is considered by many to have made significant research contributions in the areas of public finance, labor economics, financial economics, and macroeconomics, as well as international economics topics, and in 1993 was the recipient of the American Economic Association's prestigious John Bates Clark Medal for his work.
In the current economic climate, Summers' insight into the financial crisis - and the county's financial future - promises to be both timely and relevant with a Jewish twist. We're thrilled to announce him as our keynote speaker for the 2009 Consultation on Conscience and hope you're looking forward to hearing from him.
We've already announced an impressive list of speakers and will reveal the full list tomorrow - stay tuned!
