A Rabbi, a Hammer & a Compost Bin

MNamath.JPGRabbi Michael Namath is the Program Director at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism.

Yesterday afternoon, the RAC staff started preparing for the upcoming holiday of Sukkot by building a sukkah in the front yard of the RAC. Because this is a festival that reminds us to give thanks for the fall harvest, the RAC staff decided to take an additional step to remind us that we are all a part of the growing cycle by putting together a composting bin. This container will allow staff members and those participating in meetings held at our building to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfills. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, yard trimmings and food residuals together constitute 24 percent of the U.S. municipal solid waste stream.

I hope that if you are in DC next week (Monday through Friday), you will bring your lunch and join us in the RAC sukkah anytime from noon until 1:00 pm, where we'll enjoy a nosh and then put 24% of our waste into the compost bin!
