Mother Earth to Mothers: Action #6

Mil4bil.jpgAs we said last Friday when we kicked off “Mother Earth to Mothers: 17 Days of Action,” a broad coalition of environmental, reproductive health, women’s rights and other advocacy organizations has come together to organize these days of action and support the Million for a Billion campaign. The Million for a Billion campaign aims to gather signatures from 1 million individuals in support of $1 billion for international family planning assistance.

Why $1 billion? Because the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, adopted in 2000 with the goal of eradicating extreme poverty by meeting certain benchmarks, set a target of achieving universal access to reproductive health services by 2015. But current levels of international family planning assistance are woefully inadequate to meet this target. To help the global community meet this goal, advocates have estimated that the United States would need to increase its international family planning assistance allocation, which was $648 million in Fiscal Year 2010, to $1 billion.

And why 1 million? Besides the fact that “million for a billion” is a catchy slogan, it’s also true that such a significant increase in the United State’s contribution to international family planning assistance will be highly unlikely without a significant show of popular support. So for today’s action step, we’re asking you to become one in a million: Sign the petition and share it with your friends.

And, of course, check back every day for the new action step!
