But you don’t need to work in spitting distance of a farmer’s market to be an ethical eater or be in a city full of policy wonks to be a food advocate (nor do you need to be Jewish to access all the incredible resources at urj.org/food).
Certain cities are making tremendous strides in promoting ethical food choices including New Orleans – a sustainable foodie haven. While we all know the Gulf Coast region has seen its share of calamities in recent years, nothing seems to have united the city more than its vibrant food culture (well, maybe the Saints winning the Super Bowl last year).
NOLA pride can be tasted in most of the city’s top restaurants, which have made locally produced food a staple of their menus. There are some incredible organizations on the ground promoting sustainability like the Edible Schoolyard New Orleans, which is teaching school students about eating healthy, local, earth-friendly foods. We want to celebrate their outstanding work and educate others about all the opportunities to be a food justice advocate in NOLA.
So, on May 26, the Religious Action Center will be hosting the Ethical Taste Test: Not Just Another Happy Hour. Taking place at the Edible Schoolyard at the Samuel J. Green Charter School, the night will both educate and celebrate sustainability in NOLA. Tickets (incl. food + a drink ticket) are $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
