URGENT: Vote NO on Mississippi Personhood Amendment

The so-called “Personhood Amendment” to the Mississippi State Constitution (Proposition 26) that is up for a vote on November 8 is yet another attempt by anti-choice activists to essentially overturn the right to choice affirmed by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade. This amendment, if passed, would amend the state constitution to define the term “person” as including “every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the equivalent thereof.” In practice, this amendment would ban virtually all abortions, including those resulting from rape or incest. It would even bar some birth control methods, including IUDs and “morning-after pills” that prevent fertilized eggs from implanting in the uterus. It would also outlaw the destruction of embryos created in laboratories, potentially impacting the process of in vitro fertilization that helps individuals with fertility issues conceive children.

While this ballot initiative is only up for a vote in Mississippi this year, there have been efforts to place similar “personhood amendments” on ballots in Florida, Colorado, Ohio, Montana, and Wisconsin.

Take action today:
If you live in Mississippi, vote NO on Proposition 26 and inform your friends, family, and colleagues about this egregious ballot initiative. [...] The candidates and pundits engaged in the 2012 presidential campaigns promised that this campaign would feature a serious and laser-focused commitment to the core issues that face America: the economy, jobs, our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So imagine my surprise as the campaigns have spent entirely too much time debating a woman’s right to privacy, a woman’s right to receive contraception as part of her healthcare plan, a couple’s right to decide if, when and how to raise a family, and yes: a woman’s right to decide if an abortion is the right decision for her without interference by legislation.
