We’d like to wish a hearty mazel tov to Central Reform Congregation in St. Louis, MO, United Hebrew Congregation in St. Louis, MO, Temple Beth-El in Northbrook, IL, and Congregational B’nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim (BJBE) in Deerfield, IL – the four newest congregations to join the URJ-GreenFaith Partnership!
Over the next two years, these congregations will tackle the rigorous GreenFaith Certification Program, designed to turn congregations into better stewards of the environment. Each congregation has assembled a “Green Team” of lay leaders who will help take their environmental activism to the next level through a series of audits, policy reviews and educational initiatives. These four congregations will not only green their buildings and activities, but also make members of their communities aware of environmental issues and the impacts of our lifestyles on the earth.
The four congregations are part of the second cohort of the URJ-GreenFaith Partnership, which first began in 2010 with eight New Jersey congregations. After completing the GreenFaith Certification Program, one URJ congregation encountered budget savings in excess of $30,000 per year. Others have strengthened their interfaith partnerships through joint screenings and discussions of the documentaries “Food, Inc.” and “Fast Food Nation,” and many of our congregations have built community gardens, entrusting their religious school with the upkeep, harvesting and donation of produce.
Does your congregation want to reduce its carbon footprint, save money and engage members? We’re looking for four more congregations to start the GreenFaith Certification Program in December! Join us on a GreenFaith-led webinar on June 18 at 8 p.m. ET to learn about the Certification Program and how to apply for this limited-time opportunity. Register here.
