Double Booked: A Day to Remember

What a day!

After more than 80 blog entries on Double Booked, including nearly 40 faith leaders writing, we were more than ready for  yesterday’s White House Summit on Working Families.  Double Booked made a splash! The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism was honored to bring 40 moral and religious activists to the Summit, establishing a strong faith presence.

The Summit also displayed five posters from Double Booked and included over 20 Double Booked slides in an ongoing slide show on display.

It was a packed and memorable day of plenaries and breakout sessions, featuring incredible leaders and icons including the President and First Lady, the Vice President and Dr. Biden, Gloria Steinem, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, CEO of B.E.T., Debra Lee and Maria Shriver of the Shriver Report, and many more business leaders, advocates, and public officials.

The inspiring slate of speakers, combined with an energized, passionate 1200 attendees together laid the groundwork for a powerful movement. We were all reminded of the many different ways we as advocates, employees and employers can have an impact on the lives of working families. One of my favorite messages of all was this, paraphrased from Valerie Jarrett: If you, as part of a working family, are feeling overwhelmed and insufficient, you are not alone! And, You are feeling that way at least in part because American society is not doing a sufficient job of supporting working families. AMEN.

In concert with the discussions happening at the Summit, the White House announced a number of executive actions President Obama will be signing to support working families from the Administration.

Over the coming weeks, Double Booked will include a series of reflections on the Summit from the faith leaders, Double Booked writers and RAC staff who attended.

In the meantime, if you want to revisit the Summit, you can read our liveblog (with pictures) and follow our experiences of the day.

Be sure to continue to check back here at for reflection pieces and updates.
