We Can Help Give the Gift of Life

Gift of Life is one of North America’s donor bone marrow and blood stem cell registries, and a world leader helping children and adults find the matches they need when they need them. As an associate registry of the National Marrow Donor Program, Gift of Life is accredited by the World Marrow Donor Association.

Medical research has shown that donors between ages 18-45 are best for patients in need of a transplant. Both the RAC and Gift of Life are committed to helping these individuals find and receive successful transplants. Time and time again doctors request donors in this age group. Because of this, Gift of Life is now sponsoring drives for those between ages 18-45.

Because tissue type is inherited, it is likely that a matching donor and recipient will share a similar ethnic background. In the early 1990s, there were so few Jews in the registry that Jewish patients had less than a 5% chance of finding a match. Today, because of Gift of Life’s targeted recruitment strategy in Jewish communities across the U.S., Jews have greater than a 70% chance of finding a match.

One in 200 Americans will need a bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant in their lifetime. While 30% of patients can find a suitable donor from within their family, 70% must turn to the bone marrow registry to find a match.

Since the initial launch of the partnership with Gift of Life, Reform congregations across the country have been able to run donor drives resulting in the swabbing of over 7,000 people at more than 175 drives. It has produced ten matches and one successful transplant.

If you are unable to join the registry due to age or medical restrictions, you can still help save lives. While swab kits are provided free of charge to anyone in this age group who wants to join the registry, it costs $60 to process each kit. Please donate, as it requires significant fundraising to be able to save lives!

Additionally, anyone over 18 can volunteer to run a drive in their community and recruit others to help.
