Although my wife and I relocated to southern California three years ago, we left many friends at our “former synagogue,” although I do not like referring to it that way.

Until a few months ago, I felt safe whenever I stepped into our temple. But then the massacre at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Congregation occurred, and I was asked to guard our temple’s front door.

With a collaborator who wrote a clever script, I took on the role of Haman and joined my fellow actors in singing my lyrics. I also choreographed a couple of numbers, fulfilling my desire to write, sing, act, and dance.

Whenever I enter Jewish spaces, whether it’s my first time or my fiftieth, I make a conscious effort to bring my kippah, my Sh’ma bracelet, and my Magen David necklace.

Jewish wisdom says every human being is deserving of dignity and respect – and that certainly holds true whether or not they have a college degree.
