In the Wake of Hurricane Dorian: Jewish Ways You Can Help

September 12, 2019

The rain and wind have died down, but the damage and devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian continues to be uncovered. Our prayers are with those affected by the storm, including the brave first responders who put their lives on the line to help those in need. Along with prayer, we know there is a need for action and tangible aid, which is why ReformJudaism.org’s parent organization, the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), is offering ideas of how to support those who were affected by the storm.

Donate to organizations providing on-the-ground relief

There are several organizations working directly with families in the affected areas to help them rebuild their lives, including:

  • JDC Disaster Response – The JDC is coordinating with local partners in the Bahamas to provide emergency medical supplies and understand the evolving needs there in order to continue providing aid.
  • IsraAID – The IsraAID team is working on distributing urgent relief supplies in Grand Bahama, offering protection support and psychological first aid, and working to meet the water, sanitation, and hygiene needs of affected communities.

Say a prayer

Prayers can help us reflect and heal during hard times. You can say these prayers individually, with your family, with your congregation, or with your community:

We’re continuing to keep an eye on developments related to Hurricane Dorian, as well as other storms over the Atlantic as we move through the peak of hurricane season. We will share information and opportunities to help affected communities as it’s available.
